Review : Darker Than Black

"Now, I've lost it. I know I can kill, The truth is just beyond the gate!" - Darker Than Black, is an exciting, heavily arc driven sci-fi, supernatural, action anime. And has also grown popular on the net, gaining rave reviews, popularity by word of mouth and leaving trails across the forums on the net. So, it would be only natural for you to expect a good review from me on this anime!!

Story

The Story of Darker than Black takes place in the near future world where two gates have appeared ; Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate. The mysterious appearance of the gates also brought with them people who have entered into a contract with an unknown force and gained a unique power in return, those people are called "Contractors". But, The nature of the contractors requires them to fulfill an obeisance each time they use there power. The obeisance differs in each contractor and can be anything from smoking a cigarette to setting stones in an order or aging a little. The story is told from an omnipotent point of view and it loosely focuses on our main protagonist Hei.

Characters

Our MC, Hei or BK201 is portrayed brilliantly, having a rather comicbook superhero-like personality with a unique twist to it. Also, as the contractors are shown being emotionless and purely rational types, Hei somehow manages to retain his humanity. The true reason for this, as well as the source of his powers remains hidden till the last episode. Other characters are also well-portrayed, each having an unique personality and being equally interesting. The other members of Hei's organisation, Huang, Yin, and Mao each have a well written back-story, which is both engaging and important to the overall plot.

Animation and Sound

The animation was done by Studio Bones and like most of their animations in mid-2000's it is of high quality. The movements are fluid, character - designs and backgrounds are very detailed and there was no point in the anime at which there was a drop in quality. However, the best part is the quality of action scenes which is brilliantly executed and made it hard for me to just sit and admire. Overall, the animation is very beautiful and brilliantly done.

The sound of the anime is just perfect! Its able to just not capture the mood of the scene when necessary but also reduce the dark nature of scenes in the anime. And I really liked the first opening of the anime. The voice acting is top-notch and is good throughout the anime.

Enjoyment

I obviously enjoyed a lot watching this series as it had a brilliant bend of action and exposition. And, If there is a weakness in this series, it is the ending, which is unfortunately rather inconclusive. But, I really hope that you'll also enjoy this series as much as I did.

Overall, It is an excellent series but to be honest it didn't do much for me for the first 5 episodes, but at the sixth episode it got very interesting and I had no problem getting engaged. It is especially good at the OST and Art area, and after the sixth episodes I wasn't able to stop watching it! It is a Masterpiece for me.

5 STAR ANIME.

  1. this is one of those anime I've been seeing around and still haven't watch (and maybe I still haven't given so much attention). It sounds like a nice action anime and Hei seems like an MC I'd enjoy :) Hopefully I'll get around watching this on my school vacation~~ Nice review :)
